Guidance on Operational Microplanning for COVID-19 Vaccination

COVID-19 vaccination calls for robust, integrated operational microplanning. This course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, confidence, and resources to develop a comprehensive microplan for implementing COVID-19 vaccination that targets priority-use groups in a catchment area. It also provides guidance on integrating COVID-19 vaccination into planning for routine immunization and health system strengthening.

Overview: The equitable distribution and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines, especially by high-risk and vulnerable priority-use groups, requires service delivery strategies tailored to the local context, requirements, and challenges. This guidance is intended for immunization programme staff in districts and health facilities who plan, implement, and/or monitor COVID-19 vaccination operations; and/or staff and stakeholders who support related health programmes (such as childhood immunization and antenatal care). This course presents an eight-step process for COVID-19 vaccination microplanning that includes periodic re-evaluation and adjustments to address challenges and leverage resources and opportunities.

Course duration: Approximately 2 hours

Certificates: A Certificate of Achievement will be available to participants who score at least 80% in the final assessment. Participants who receive a Certificate of Achievement can also download an Open Badge for this course. Click here to learn how.

Lo que aprenderá

  • Describe how to develop a comprehensive microplan for implementing COVID-19 vaccination that targets priority-use groups in a catchment area.
  • Explain how to use human, material, and financial resources to tailor service delivery strategies to reach and vaccinate priority-use groups.
  • Use standard microplanning templates.
  • Identify when and how to re-evaluate a COVID-19 microplan and revise service delivery approaches.
  • Value the importance of integrating COVID-19 vaccination into planning for routine immunization and health system strengthening.

Contenido del curso

  • Introduction to COVID-19 vaccination microplanning:

By the end of this module, you will: describe what a COVID-19 vaccination microplan is; list the steps in microplanning for COVID-19 vaccination; and name the benefits of integrating COVID-19 vaccination microplanning with routine immunization and primary healthcare services.
  • Module 1: Step 1: Estimate targets:

By the end of this module, you will: Identify the priority-use subgroups for COVID-19 vaccination in a catchment area; estimate the population of each priority-use subgroup and the total population of all subgroups; explain the benefits of preparing line lists of individuals in specific high-risk priority-use groups; and l ist the components of budget estimates related to estimating targets.
  • Module 2: Step 2: Calculate requirements:

By the end of this module, you will: calculate the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses required and the total vaccine volume for a given catchment area; list the factors that determine the types and amounts of ancillary supplies required for COVID-19 vaccination service delivery, and identify the components of budget estimates for activities related to calculating estimates.
  • Module 3: Step 3: Plan vaccine management:

By the end of this module, you will: calculate the storage space needed for COVID-19 vaccines; specify the elements of plans for storing COVID-19 vaccines and ancillary supplies; and identify the components of budget estimates related to vaccine management.
  • Module 4: Step 4: Identify and manage human resources:

By the end of this module, you will: identify human resource needs and gaps for COVID-19 vaccination in a catchment area; explain how to plan a training for staff participating in COVID-19 vaccination; and list the components of budget estimates related to securing and managing human resources for COVID-19 vaccination.
  • Module 5: Step 5: Plan service delivery:

By the end of this module, you will: explain how to plan a vaccine delivery strategy and vaccination sites for specific priority-use subgroups; and name the components of budget estimates related to COVID-19 vaccination service delivery.
  • Module 6: Step 6: Generate demand:

By the end of this module, you will: describe the importance and objectives of communications for COVID-19 vaccination; develop a COVID-19 vaccination communications plan for a health facility catchment area; and identify the components of budget estimates related to generating demand.
  • Module 7: Step 7: Monitor implementation:

By the end of this module, you will: specify the elements of monitoring COVID-19 vaccination operations; list the responsibilities of supervisory personnel; explain how to develop a field visit plan to monitor COVID-19 vaccination activities; and name the components of budget estimates for monitoring COVID-19 vaccination implementation.
  • Module 8: Step 8: Re-evaluate the microplan:

By the end of this module, you will: define the types of situations that necessitate re-evaluating a COVID-19 vaccination microplan; and delineate the process of re-evaluating and revising a microplan.
