Overview: During the COVID-19 pandemic health workers, in particular those in contact with and/or who care for COVID-19 patients, are at higher risk of being infected with SARS-CoV-2 than the general population. As the pandemic evolves, studies indicate that transmission involving health workers is also occurring in community settings (such as in households) in addition to health care settings. COVID-19 infections among health workers may lead to a depleted workforce during a time when the demand on the health care system has increased. In addition, health workers who are infected are at risk of transmitting SARS-CoV-2 virus to others in households and other community settings. This discourse provides an overview of strategies for the prevention, surveillance and testing of COVID-19 in health workers including the management following exposure and eventual safe return to work of health workers who have had suspected or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections.
