The rate of people lost to follow-up among new and relapse TB cases identified in 2019 varied from 3.7% in the European Union/European Economic Area to 4.9% in non-EU/EEA countries. In cases of people lost to follow-up, some people with TB will avoid further contact with healthcare services until severe complications develop, resulting in a higher likelihood of spreading the disease further.

National TB programmes in Eastern Europe and Central Asia and beyond must work to find an optimal approach to reinitiate TB treatment after it has been interrupted. Supportive community-based care can assist in the effective scaling-up of TB management and its continuity, particularly among vulnerable populations. Tracing loss to follow-up (LFU) cases will enable local healthcare providers to conduct proper case management, thus encouraging these individuals to return to service, e.g., reinitiate treatment after LFU. Advocating for the extension of LFU surveillance on other services, such as diagnostic processes, social support, post-treatment monitoring, rehabilitation, and other categories of care, as well as including people with latent TB infection or receiving palliative care, would be an essential step in the implementation of a people-centred approach in the EECA region.
