Overview: Yellow fever is a vaccine-preventable mosquito-borne disease capable of causing high-impact large-scale outbreaks with risk of international spread. The virus is endemic in parts of Africa and the Americas, and infection can cause an acute viral haemorrhagic disease leading, in some cases, to severe illness and death. Early identification, confirmation and response, including vaccination of high-risk populations, is essential to controlling and preventing large-scale yellow fever outbreaks. This course aims to provide the learner with a framework of steps to assure complete and timely investigation and response to a yellow fever outbreak, with appropriate monitoring for impact. The target audience is field-level clinicians, surveillance and laboratory personnel and public health practitioners involved in yellow fever control.
