Course information

Course overview: Zoonotic diseases, classified as either endemic or emerging, pose risks to both animal and public health. Activities to identify, assess, manage and reduce risks from zoonotic diseases benefit from coordination and collaboration between ministries. The Joint Risk Assessment (JRA) Operational Tools (OT) was developed by the Tripartite organizations – the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Organisation of Animal Health (OIE), and the World Health Organization (WHO)– and technical experts, to provide guidance on how to set up a joint qualitative risk assessment process at the national and subnational levels.

In this training, participants will explore the step-by-step process for setting up the JRA, conducting the technical risk assessment, and translating results to risk management options and communication needs. The JRA OT allows decision-makers to build and implement science-based risk management measures that are aligned between sectors and implemented jointly.

Learning objectives: By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Understand the purpose of the JRA and describe the key principles of risk assessment
  • Explore how to set up a JRA at the national or subnational level
  • Describe the important aspects of risk framing that inform JRA
  • Develop appropriate risk assessment questions
  • Navigate the technical steps of a joint risk assessment
  • Use country examples to apply the technical steps of the JRA and create risk management and communication options.

  • Module 0: Introduction to Joint Risk Assessment:

    In this section, you'll gather the necessary background to fully understand the scope and purpose of the joint risk assessment process

  • Module 1: Setting up the JRA :

    In this section, you'll navigate steps 1-4 to set up a structure and approach for conducting JRA at country level

  • Module 2: Risk Framing Prior to the JRA:

    In this section, you'll learn how to complete a risk framing for the selected hazard(s) prior to the JRA workshop

  • Module 3: Technical Steps for the JRA:

    In this section, you'll prepare to conduct the technical risk assessment. This includes diagraming risk pathways, formulating risk assessment questions and characterising risk

  • Module 4: Risk Management, Communication and Next Steps:

    In this section, you'll use the results of the technical risk assessment to identify risk management options and communicate the results
