Dental amalgam has been used as a restorative material to address dental caries and is one of the contributors to mercury consumption across the globe. The Minamata Convention on Mercury is a global treaty that aims to protect human health and the environment from anthropogenic emissions and releases of mercury and mercury compounds. The treaty outlines the provisions to phase-down the use of dental amalgam.
This online course is intended to enhance the knowledge and skills of oral health personnel in phasing down the use of dental amalgam and implementing environmentally sound practices to manage its associated wastes.

This course is part of a series of four SEARO Courses on Oral Health. For a better learning experience, we recommend accessing the courses in the order listed below:
Course 1: Identifying oral diseases and promoting oral hygiene in primary healthcare setting
Course 2: Use of fluoride varnish to prevent dental caries
Course 3: Oral health care of pregnant women and newborns
Course duration: Approximately two hours.
