The ABCs of Diagnosing Hyperhidrosis

This course provides healthcare providers with the information necessary to appropriately diagnose hyperhidrosis (extreme, uncontrollable sweating beyond what is physiologically necessary or expected, also called Hh) and to differentiate between primary focal and secondary hyperhidrosis. Participants will learn the prevalence of Hh, the mental health and quality of life impacts of Hh, the differences between primary and secondary Hh, the key components of Hh diagnosis (ABCs of Hh diagnosis), and about the different focal areas commonly affected by Hh.

Overview: This course is designed to enhance clinical proficiency and improve patient outcomes by equipping participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical tools for hyperhidrosis diagnosis. Through participation in this educational experience, healthcare professionals will learn essential criteria for identifying and differentiating between primary and secondary hyperhidrosis. Participants will garner systematic approaches to relevant medical history-taking, physical examination, and diagnostic criteria, thus enabling accurate diagnosis.

Course duration: Approximately twenty minutes.

Certificates: A certificate of participation will be available to participants who complete at least 100% of the course material.

Conteúdo do curso

  • Part 1: Introduction into Primary vs Secondary Hyperhidrosis:

    By the end of this part of the presentation, participants will: define hyperhidrosis as a medical condition and recognize its prevalence; define primary focal hyperhidrosis and secondary generalized hyperhidrosis; explain the key differences between primary and secondary hyperhidrosis in terms of etiology and presentation; list the most common focal areas involved in primary focal hyperhidrosis; and discuss the diagnostic tests and evaluations necessary to rule out secondary hyperhidrosis.
  • Part 2: The ABCs of Hyperhidrosis Diagnosis:

    By the end of this part of the course, participants will: explain the diagnostic criteria used to solidify a diagnosis of primary hyperhidrosis including age of onset, key features of primary hyperhidrosis related to sleep and bilateral orientation on the body, duration/history and episodes of symptoms, and the role of genetics; and further understand and articulate the quality of life and mental health impacts of hyperhidrosis and the role of effective diagnosis and treatment.
