The World Health Organization (WHO) launched OpenWHO.org in 2017 to provide an open source of public health knowledge for emergencies in anticipation of the next pandemic. Learning materials are grounded in WHO scientific and operational guidance and presented in low-bandwidth optimized formats that can easily be adapted, contextualized and translated across the globe.
In 2025, the site was redesigned to empower even more frontline responders, health workers, policy-makers and the public with life-saving knowledge for health emergencies. The new OpenWHO is a learning resource hub with videos, slides, handouts and other capacity-building materials to keep communities safe in health crises.
What's new?
The new site is designed to have as few barriers to access as possible. It is completely open without registration and does not provide certificates. Rather than enrolling in individual courses, you can browse learning materials by topic and utilize the videos, slides and handouts however is most useful to you.
Analyses of OpenWHO learner behaviour have found that registration can act as a barrier to accessing materials, including in many communities where knowledge is most needed. Videos, slides and downloadable documents are the most preferred learning formats, and a majority of learners are accessing these on their smartphones during health emergencies.
OpenWHO focuses on providing operational learning materials for health emergencies topics, from infectious diseases to emergency management. Browse our online resources and start learning today.
